During the recent holiday, it was one of the most popular tourist spots amo

“The more I help others, the more confidence and positive energ

As for the bill, it is largely a “one-time trial” of th

Curbing the spread of ‘surveillance states’

The emergence of surveillance states is rooted in the irratio

nal panic of the people against foreign countries and the use o

f such panic by the government. These sentiments and circumstances have been reflected in the unpr

ovoked attacks on the Chinese government and Chinese companies over the past few years.

The monkeys implanted with human genes developed bett

better short-term memory and faster reaction times compared with the control group, acco

rding findings published March 27 in the China-based journal National Science Review.

The study also found that transgenic monkeys’ brains took longer to develop, in a similar fashion to humans.

The experiment has divided the scientific community however, with a number of Western scientists criticizing it as uneth

ical, while some went as far to suggest, perhaps ironically, that it could lead to a Planet of the Apes-type scenario.

The Kunming Institute of Zoology told China Daily in a statement that the experiment was ethically approved in 2010.

In 2015 the animal rights committee of Kunming Biomed International, a research organiza

tion specializing in nonhuman primates, also declared the animals were being treated humanely in every

step of the experiment, in accordance with domestic and international regulations, the statement said.

hina to ease permanent residency requirements in lar

China said Monday it will ease the requirements for permanent residency in many large cities as part of its new urbanization push.

Restrictions on permanent residence permits should be scrapped in cities with populatio

ns between 1 million and 3 million, according to a document outlining key urbanization tasks this year release

d by the National Development and Reform Commission, the country’s top economic planner.

For cities with populations of 3 million to 5 million, the qualifications for such permits should be “fully relaxed,” and the restrictions

for certain key groups of people to get such permits should be removed, the document said.

Previously, the country has already gradually abolished permanent residency restrictions in

small and medium-sized cities and towns with populations below 1 million.

The NDRC document also demanded cities with populations above 5

million to improve their policies and drastically expand the scale of permanent residency.

The pound fell on the uncertainty surrounding the poten

ial delay and the fact that a no-deal Brexit remained possible. By 1800 GMT it was down around 0.4 percent against the dollar.

Nearly three years after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, there is still no

clarity over how, when or even whether the world’s fifth largest economy should leave the bloc it joined in 1973.

When May set the March 29 exit date two years ago by serving the formal

Article 50 divorce papers, she declared there would be “no turning back”. But parliament’s ref

usal to ratify the withdrawal deal she agreed with the EU has thrust her government into crisis.

The Labour Party said that, by choosing a short delay, May was forcing

lawmakers to decide between accepting a deal they have already rejected or leaving without a deal.

On Friday, a standoff occurred between a local indigenous comm

unity and the military over aid delivery near Gran Sabana, on the Brazil-Venezuela border, said the town’s mayor, Emilio Go

nzalez. He told CNN the military opened fire on an indigenous group trying to facilitate the passage of aid into Venezuela.

Gonzalez said soldiers shot and killed a 34-year-old indigenous Venezuelan woman and injured 17 others.

National Assembly member Americo De Grazia said on his official Twitter feed that two

people had died. The second victim was an indigenous man, according to De Grazia.

Gonzalez said indigenous guards detained 27 Venezuelan military members. Venez

uela’s Ministry of Defense told CNN it had no information on the incident.

  Tensions escalate over aid

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who invoked a constitutional provision last month to declare himself acting

president, condemned the incident in a tweet Friday, saying such acts by the military “will not go unpunished.”

Geovanis, who married a Russian woman, obtained a

Russian passport in 2014. He was last seen by family members in the US in early 2017 after the death of his mother.

He is not believed to have returned to the US since then, and his decision to remain in M

oscow means US congressional investigators can’t easily find out what he knows.

In 2017 Geovanis was reemployed by Lebow to set up the Russian arm of another venture, Somerset Coal Inter

national, an energy technology company which claims to “clean” coal by washing it at high pressure.

Among those approached by Geovanis for investment was Deripaska, the billionaire m

etals and mining magnate, for whom Geovanis worked in the mid-2000s, according to a person fa

miliar with Somerset Coal’s business plan, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Deripaska is so closely aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin that the US sanctioned

him and his companies in order to punish the Russian government for its activities around the 2016

election. The Trump administration lifted sanctions on three of those companies last month.

A spokesperson for Deripaska did not return CNN’s requests for comment.
