At the botanic park, one of the core areas of the expo

more than 100 projectors were installed to digitally recreate mangrove fo

rests and the environment surrounding them: tropical seas, tides and beaches.

With sound, light and electrical effects, the exhibition shows how mangroves, one of the very few vegetation env

ironments that can survive in coastal waters, thrive in the tides and change their surroundings for the better.

Tianjin resident Li Lingyan, who visited the park on Monday, was fascinated by the mangrove exhibition.

“Looking at the exhibit, it is as though I was brought to the seashore to se

e how mangroves grow in a tough environment. It was an amazing process,” she said.

” I was totally thrilled, and I got to learn a lot about mangroves.”

Near Gate No 5 of the park, “a forest of lights and shadows” draws crowds.

ems must be prioritized to ensure periodical targets can be achieved before 2020.

The country will host over 5,000 participants from mor

than 150 countries, including 37 heads of state or government, for the thre

e-day event starting on Thursday, Wang said, adding the forum, themed “Belt and Road Coop

eration: Shaping a Brighter Shared Future”, aims to bring about high-quality cooperation under the initiative.

President Xi Jinping will deliver a keynote speech at the op

ening ceremony of the forum, and chair the leaders’ round-table summit, Wang said.

Saying the BRI has delivered real benefits to participating countries, Wang stated the hats like “debt traps” cannot be put onto t

he head of the Belt and Road, and this is not something any participating country would recognize.

He added that international communities should base their understandings and comments about the BRI on the facts.

Trade volume between China and the countries participating in the B

RI has exceeded $6 trillion, the number of investment is over $80 billion and arou

nd 300,000 jobs have been created for the people from the countries involved in the initiative, Wang said.

On the basis of the four China-Japan political documen

s and in the spirit of seeing history as a mirror as well as facing the future, the two nations sho

uld continue to work toward the long-term, healthy and stable development of bilateral relations, he said.

As major economies in the world, China and Japan both support free trade and obey WTO rules, Li said.

He also welcomed Japanese businesses to expand investment in China

as the country will continue to unwaveringly deepen reform and expand opening-up.

China stands ready to move forward with talks with Japan and other rel

ated parties to further the negotiations regarding the Regional Comprehensive Econo

mic Partnership as well as the China-Japan-Republic of Korea Free Trade Agreement, he said.

Li also voiced China’s support for Japan’s hosting of the G20 Summit, which is slated this year

to be held in Osaka, and he hoped it would inject fresh impetus into global economic growth.

Kono expressed his appreciation for efforts made by the Chinese premier in helping return bilateral relations to the right track.

He is scheduled to meet with European Council Presi

sident Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Tuesday at the European Union headquarters in the Belgian capital.

The leaders of the two sides will exchange views on China-EU relations and major international

and regional issues of common concern. A number of agreements are to be signed after that.

This is Li’s fifth time attending the China-EU leaders’ meeting as prem

ier, and his sixth visit to a Central and Eastern European nation to attend the China-CEEC

meeting, with the previous five being in Romania, Serbia, Latvia, Hungary and Bulgaria.

Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Chao, who oversees China’s relations with EU

nations, said at a briefing last week that the EU is a highly integrated regional bloc an

d a vital strategic force in the international community. China and the EU share broad com

mon interests in pragmatic cooperation and have a common stance regarding multilateralism and free trade, he said.

The EU has been China’s biggest trading partner for 15 consecutive years and Chin

But one of the first things taught to economics gradu

students, even back in my day, is to be wary of the perils of data mining. And the middle-income tra

p is a classic example of the pitfalls of endless number crunching. Give me a database and a po

werful computer, and I can “validate” almost any economic relationship masquerading as an analytical co

njecture. There are five key reasons to dismiss the widespread diagnosis that China is ensnared in the middle-income trap.

First, a middle-income trap may not even exist. That is the conclusion of a rigorous empirical stud

y by Lant Pritchett and Lawrence Summers that covers a broad cross section of 125 economies from 1950 to 20

10. The best they could come up with is a strong tendency for growth discontinuities and mean reversion. At the recent China Development Forum in Be

ijing, Summers went further in assessing likely outcomes in rapidly growing developing economies, dubbing any

mean-reverting slowdown as merely a tendency to close a “post-miracle gap”. Needless to say, the statistical regularity of s

uch periodic growth gaps is very different from the permanent quagmire of a growth trap.
